Frequently asked

Common questions about UK pharmacies

These are the questions visitors most often have when searching for a local NHS pharmacy. For specific medical advice always consult a healthcare professional.

Are all UK pharmacies part of the NHS?
Most UK pharmacies are independent businesses or chains that hold a contract with the NHS to dispense prescriptions and provide NHS clinical services. A small number operate privately without an NHS contract. The pharmacies listed in this directory all hold active NHS contracts in England.
Can a UK pharmacist prescribe antibiotics?
Under the NHS Pharmacy First Scheme, community pharmacists in England can supply prescription-only treatment, including antibiotics where clinically appropriate, for seven common conditions without the need to see a GP. This includes sinusitis, sore throat, earache, infected insect bites, impetigo, shingles, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women aged 16 to 64.
How do I find a pharmacy that is open right now?
Search your town or postcode using the search above. Each pharmacy listing shows contact details so you can phone ahead to check opening hours. Some pharmacies hold 100-hour NHS contracts which require longer opening times. The NHS website also lists pharmacies offering urgent or out-of-hours dispensing.
What is an ODS code and why does it matter?
An ODS code (Organisation Data Service code) is a unique identifier assigned by the NHS to every healthcare organisation, including pharmacies. The code is used on prescriptions, in Electronic Prescription Service nominations, and for NHS communications. Each pharmacy listing on this site shows its ODS code for reference.
Can I have my NHS prescription delivered?
Many UK pharmacies offer NHS prescription delivery, either through their own service or by partnering with online pharmacies such as Pharmacy2U, LloydsDirect or Chemist4U. Contact your chosen pharmacy to ask about their delivery options, or browse our online pharmacies guide for free delivery services.
Which pharmacies offer the NHS Pharmacy First scheme?
Most NHS-contracted community pharmacies in England participate in the Pharmacy First scheme. To confirm before visiting, search for your local pharmacy in our directory and phone them directly to check which Pharmacy First conditions they currently treat.
Is this website affiliated with the NHS?
No. This is an independent directory built using publicly available data from the NHS Business Services Authority Open Data Portal. It is not operated by, or affiliated with, the NHS. Always verify pharmacy details directly with the pharmacy before visiting, and call 111 or 999 for medical advice.
How often is the pharmacy data updated?
The NHS Business Services Authority refreshes its pharmacy contractor dataset monthly. We update our directory to match shortly after each new release so that closed pharmacies are removed and new contracts are added.
